Nursing
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are Registered Nurses (RNs) who have completed advanced education (Masters Degree) and training to provide expert health care directly to patients. NPs can diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications, order lab tests and diagnostic imaging (such as an X-Ray, MRI, etc.), write sick notes, and provide referrals to specialists.
In the event that a NP is unavailable, you can still book an appointment with a RN. After your appointment, the RN will consult with the NP based on your health concerns, such as medication refills. This is part of our team approach to deliver the best, and most effective care for you, our patient.
RNs also engage in public health education, research and administration. Their knowledge, skills and abilities include complex critical thinking, co-ordination of care, leadership of multidisciplinary teams, comprehensive assessments, holistic care and more.
Counselling
a MSW Counsellor Counselor offers guidance to individuals, couples, families and groups who are dealing with issues that affect their mental health and well-being. Many counsellors approach their work holistically, using a “wellness” model (as opposed to an “illness” model) which highlights and encourages client’s strengths.
Counsellors:
-Work with individuals, groups and communities to improve mental health
-Encourage clients to discuss emotions and experiences
-Examine issues including substance abuse, aging, bullying, anger management, careers, depression, relationships, LGBTQ issues, self-image, stress and suicide
-Work with families
-Help clients define goals, plan action and gain insight
-Develop therapeutic processes
-Refer clients to psychologists and other services
-Take a holistic (mind and body) approach to mental health care
-Refer to nurse practitioners to consult and determine if medication is appropriate as part of a treatment plan
Social workers help identify and remove barriers to patients by providing a broad range of social and family supports, connecting people with programs and services to help meet their basic needs, and work with individuals to solve relationship problems and enhance their overall social well being.
